Download of uTorrent

First of all you need to download uTorrent on your computer. First, however, I want to remind you that there are several variations of this famous program: a free one supported by advertising banners and promotional content and a paid one that costs $ 19.95 / year, which also offers instant streaming of Torrents and automatic protection against viruses and malware and that, as easily understood, is free of advertising.

That said, to be able to download the program all you have to do is connect to its official website and click on the free download button for Windows if you use a Windows PC or the button Download for free if what you’re using it’s a Mac.

Then wait for the download procedure to start and complete (if you have not made any changes to the default settings of your browser the uTorrent installation file will be saved in the Download folder of your computer) and then put into practice the instructions on installation and configuration of the software you find in the next step.

Installation and configuration of uTorrent

Once I get the uTorrent installation file I would say that we can finally go to the real core of the issue and then find out how to install and configure this little program to the fullest. Find all the appropriate instructions, both for Windows and for Mac, right below.

On Windows

To install uTorrent on your Windows PC first, by double-clicking, open the executable file (utorrent.exe) previously downloaded from the program’s website.

Then click on Run, on Yes and on Next twice in a row. Accept the terms of use of the software by clicking on the Next button and refusing to download promotional content by pressing the Decline button. Finally, remove the check mark from the entries relating to the installation of additional software (eg Opera) and presses on Next for three consecutive times and then on Finish, so as to complete the setup.

utorrent setup

Wait a few moments for the window to be visible on the desktop (uTorrent should start automatically but if this does not happen you recall it from the Start menu or by double clicking on the icon added to the desktop) then proceed with the configuration of uTorrent first going in the Settings section of the program by selecting the appropriate item added to the Options menu, by clicking on the Connection item from the left sidebar and taking note of the value shown next to the Port used for incoming connections in the other window that opens.

utorrent-connection

Now, access the configuration panel of your modem / router by opening the browser you usually use to surf the net and connecting to its IP address which usually corresponds to 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. If requested, also enter the username and password combination to login (if you have not changed it, it should be admin / admin or admin / password). For more details on what to do, you can refer to my guide on how to access the router.

Once you have logged in to the modem / router, look for the port forwarding or virtual server function among the various settings and items available and create a new rule (or a new virtual server) by entering the port number used by uTorrent to accommodate incoming connections at the initial port and final port (or internal port and external port), the local IP address of the computer on which you want to use the program at destination IP (or server IP address ), the TCP value corresponding to the Port type (or Protocol) section and the name to the rule you are about to create in correspondence of the dedicated field, in fact, when the name is entered. For more information on what to do, you can refer to my article on how to open the router ports for uTorrent.

Now that you have opened the door used by uTorrent in your modem / router, you have to make sure that the program fully exploits the potential of your connection. To do that, you just need to use the automatic settings optimization feature included in the software.

To use it, first select the Configuration Wizard item attached to the uTorrent Options menu. In the window that you will then see appear, make sure that the box next to the Band and Network items is checked (and if you do), select a location near you from the drop-down menu at the top and press the Start Test button.

At the end of the test, if everything went well, you should see green check marks next to the Band and Network entries. The download and upload parameters of the program have been adjusted so you can save everything by clicking on the Save button & Close. If the tests do not give a positive result, go back into the administration panel of your modem / router and verify that you have set everything correctly, also ensuring that there are no firewalls on your computer that block the operation of uTorrent.

On Mac

But if what you’re using is a Mac, the procedure you need to start up in order to install and configure uTorrent on your computer is slightly different than what you saw together just before for Windows. First, open the installation file of the previously downloaded program (uTorrent.dmg).

Then double-click on the uTorrent logo attached to the Finder window that opened, click on Open and then on Continue and on Accept. Then click on Skip to prevent your browser’s search engine from being changed and select No, thanks to reject the installation of additional programs. When the installation procedure is complete, press down on Finish and you will see the program window appear on the desk.

Mac-uTorrent

If the uTorrent interface is not in Italian but in English, translate it by going to the uTorrent> Preferences menu, selecting the General tab from the window that opens and setting Italian in the drop down menu at the bottom of the window). To make the changes effective you will need to restart the application.

At this point, make the configuration of uTorrent in your modem / router by following the same directions on what to do that I gave you in the previous lines, when I told you about the version of the Windows program by taking note of the door to open by going to the uTorrent menu > Preferences … of the program, select the Network tab from the window that opens and taking a look at what is reported in the entry TCP Port inbound.

Now you have to worry about optimally configuring the software parameters. Unlike the version for Windows OS, uTorrent for Mac does not integrate a special function for which you have to do everything “by hand”. First, test the speed of your Internet connection by connecting to the SpeedTest website, by clicking on the Settings button in the upper right, setting Kbps in the Speed item and then pressing the Go button that is at the top.

At the end of the test, take note of the values obtained, connected to the Azureus Calculator website and fill out the form with your connection data by typing in the text field placed next to the kiloByte / second entry the upload value obtained in the test performed with SpeedTest .

Now proceed to return the values generated by Azureus Calculator in the settings of uTorrent on the Mac. Then open the configuration panel of the program by going to the uTorrent menu> Preferences … and select the Band tab. Remove the check mark from the Automatically manage the band (if present) and fill in the fields of the displayed form as shown below by first ticking the relevant entries (if necessary).

Upload: – Manually limit to: -> value kB / s max upload speed of Azureus Calculator.
Download: – Manually limit to: -> value kB / s max download speed of Azureus Calculator.

Then move to the BitTorrent tab and fill out the fields below with their values.

Connections: – Global limit: -> Maximum number of connections globally of Azureus Calculator.
Connections: – Torrent limit: -> Maximum number of connections value for Azureus Calculator torrent.
Code: – Enable transfer limits -> Max active torrents value of Azureus Calculator.
Code: – Enable download limits -> Max simultaneous downloads of Azureus Calculator.

All changes made to the program will be applied instantly, just close the settings window. If problems should occur, check that you have correctly configured uTorrent on your router and make sure that the macOS firewall or whatever it is you are using on your Mac is not hampering the way the program works.

Download torrent files

Once you have downloaded and installed uTorrent and after having proceeded to configure the operation of the program you must, of course, find the files to be downloaded, the files in .torrent format, for the note. To find them, you can use some search engines.

Among the various available I suggest you rely on Torrentz2 that works based on the databases of numerous Torrent sites. It does not provide direct links for the download but refers to the pages on the sites from which it takes the results offered.

To use it, connected to the home page of the site, type the name of the file you want to download in the search bar and click on the Search button on the right. Once the page with the search results is displayed, find the items that have a greater number of peers (ie multiple shares), select one of the Torrent sites available for download and, in the page that opens, download the file. torent or magnet link related to the file you selected by clicking on the buttons displayed on the screen.

torentz2

Please note that if you download a .torrent file you will then have to open it by double clicking and uTorrent will immediately take charge of it, while if you select a magnet link uTorrent it will open automatically and start downloading the linked file.

If then through Torrentz2 you can not find the files that interest you, you can try to take a look at other sites dedicated to the search for Torrents that I have reported in my guide on the subject. Further useful resources for this purpose can then be found in my tutorial on how to search for torrents and in my post on the best free torrent search engines.
